Preparation for Work in Health and Social Care
This 12-week course offers ESOL students, who have good communication skills (E3 or above), to gain skills and knowledge in jobs that are popular and in demand now. It’s based on the Care certificate and gives you an overview of the skills and knowledge required to work in the sector.
What will I do?
The day will be split into 3 sessions
Session 1: 9:30 -12:00 p.m. ESOL English
The morning will focus English skills – writing, reading, speaking & listening. There will be grammar and useful vocabulary related to your vocational (voc) lessons will be covered. You will take your writing exam in December.
Session 2 1:00 -2:00 p.m. Health and Social Care
This time will be spent in the Health and Social Care department. You will be given the opportunity to see the type of work done and the skills needed.
For example:
• Care values
• Equality and diversity
• Safeguarding
• Infection control
• Communication skills
There are also some practical sessions built in such as personal care and infection control and basic CPR. You will learn about the industry and the language learnt in the English classroom can be applied. Any new vocabulary or phrases can be noted, and we can practise each week. The time spent in this lesson will increase your confidence, understanding and give you a better chance of gaining a placement if you decide this is a job you would like to pursue in the future.
Session 3 2:00 -3:00 p.m.
The final hour of the day will offer you the chance to ‘brush up’ on your maths skills/ or employability skills /or study skills according to your needs.
Entry requirements
You will need to be working towards functional skills level 1 or a very high level E3 in English as you will need to be able to read some detailed material and take part in discussions on a weekly basis as part of the course.
