What is this course about?
The preparation of different surfaces and substrates, the application of different types of finishes and the communication skills required to work with others in the workplace. Apply wallpaper to a ceiling, chimney breast, feature wall and window wall, create various decorative finishes including marble, wood grain and stencils, learn the theory behind colour and demonstrate how to mix colours. Apply paint using the correct techniques – doors, windows, ceilings, and walls.

We are associated with Dulux and held the regional heat of the Dulux young apprentice of the year competition, which is the biggest heat in England. Our team of lecturers are experienced in all types of decorating and have a wealth of knowledge to pass on to our students.
What will I learn on this course?
The course will cover the following topics: Health, safety and welfare in construction, Principles of building construction, information and communication, Erecting and dismantling access equipment and working platforms, preparing surfaces for decoration, applying paint systems by brush and roller to complex areas, applying standard papers to walls and ceilings, producing specialist finishes for decorative work, Creating and applying colour. The practical work you will undertake will prepare you for real life situations. You will complete out of college projects designed to support the community and allow you to gain valuable experience on site.
Entry Requirements:
You will need to have at least 4 GCSE’s Grade 9 –4 including Maths and English Language.
The successful completion of this course could lead to an apprenticeship or employment in this industry.
Enrichment Opportunities:
The College has a full enrichment programme, and all students are expected to make the most of their time with us. New enrichment activities include various sports tournaments, table tennis, remote control model racing. There will also be various trips and visits throughout the year.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment are carried out on all practical tasks throughout the year. Each practical task will result in a pass, merit or distinction grade depending on the quality of your work produced. You will also be assessed through online and paper exams at the end of each written unit.
Any additional costs?
Each student will need to purchase a Riverside College Hi Vis Polo T-shirt, Bib and brace Overalls, safety boots, writing equipment and a ring binder with note paper. You will also need a Hamilton Acorn 7-piece brush kit.
