What is this course about?
On this course you will learn all the basic skills required to become a Bricklayer. As part of the training, you will be introduced to health & safety practices related to the workplace, preparation work, initial stages of construction planning, how to calculate materials used in the process of bricklaying and how to construct different types of wall.

As part of your studies, it is expected that you will undertake some work experience in the community, which will add to your experience of work situations.
What will I learn on this course?
The course will cover an introduction to the following subjects: Safe working practices, Information relating to quantities & Communication with others, Setting out up to Damp Proof Course, Block laying skills, Bricklaying skills and Cavity wall construction. You will complete a number of practical projects and assessments. There are also end of unit assessments which are completed online. The practical projects you will complete as part of the training and assessment will prepare you for real life work situations.
Entry Requirements:
4 GCSEs at grades 9 – 2 including English Language and Maths.
What will this course lead on to?
The successful completion of the brickwork course could lead to a Level 2 Brickwork Diploma or possible apprenticeship programme. During the course all students will be expected to gain work experience in order to make the transition to the workplace, as smooth as possible.

New enrichment activities include various sports tournaments, table tennis, X-Box competitions, remote control model racing. There will also be various trips and visits throughout the year.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is carried out at the end of each unit through an online multiple-choice test. There are also practical assessment throughout the year, which are graded Pass, Merit, or Distinction.
Any additional costs?
Each student will need to wear protective clothing in the workshop areas. You will be asked to purchase Work trousers, safety boots, Riverside College polo shirt, stationary equipment and a ring binder with note paper.
