What is this course about?
This course will give you an introduction into the exciting career of catering. You will work in our practical kitchens and our training restaurant, preparing, cooking and serving a wide range of savoury and sweet dishes. Theory assignments will give you the underpinning knowledge to assist your understanding of the topics within practical areas. Classes will consist of both 16-18 and adult students.
What will I learn on this course?
You will be involved in both practical & theory sessions which include: knowledge of the catering industry, health & safety, teamwork, preparing & cooking a variety of savoury and sweet dishes and working to a prepared menu. You will work in Scholars Restaurant on food and bar service to fully understand the catering industry. You will have the opportunity to take part in prestigious external events with national catering companies.
Entry Requirements:
Working at Entry Level 3 in English on our college assessment or a minimum GCSE grade E/2 or Entry Level 3 English qualification (including reading and writing). You will also have a college admissions interview.
What will this course lead on to?
Progression onto the Level 2 Diploma in Professional Cooking or obtain work in the industry as a Commis Chef.
How will I be assessed?
During your programme you will be assessed by observation of your practical skills, short answer papers, assignment and completion of a portfolio.

Are there any costs associated with this course?
You will be expected to purchase your full kitchen uniform, full restaurant uniform and basic set of knives which costs approximately £225 (TBC – there may be help available with the cost of the kit/equipment). The college will help you order these. Kits can be ordered in September when you enrol.
Facilities:
You will work in a range of kitchens including a newly refurbished production kitchen with ceramic cookers, wok, larder kitchen and pastry kitchen. Part of your studies will include working in a newly refurbished and very popular restaurant Scholars. All practical sessions will help give you the practical skills, confidence and the overview of what the catering and hospitality industry can offer.
