What is this course about?
On this course you will study a variety of health-related areas such as legislation, communication and sociology. You will complete work experience in a variety of settings including residential homes to work as a volunteer and to share good practice. You will also have the opportunity to visit universities to experience student life. This course is an excellent opportunity to develop professional skills, knowledge and expertise in all aspects of health and social care with adults and children. An integral part of the course is attending a range of placements that offer the opportunity to develop skills further and relate theory to practice, again with children and adults.

Entry Requirements:
A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 9 – 4 including a grade 4 in English Language and Maths. Students must also have a clear DBS (please enquire at your interview).

What will this course lead on to?
You could progress to a BA (Hons) degree in Adult & Children’s Nursing, Mental Health roles & Learning Disability Nursing, Social Work and Youth Work, Public Health, Social Care, Community Work and SEN. You could enter employment as a senior care worker in a range of settings including residential and nursing homes.

What will I learn on this course?
The course will enable you to develop the knowledge and skills required to work in a range of health related professions, including Anatomy and physiology, psychology, sociology and health education. The placement experience will enable you develop your practical and personal skills that you will need to be successful in your chosen career.

Enrichment Opportunities: 
You will have the opportunity to visit universities to experience student life in taster days/week. Additionally, you will be able to build up a portfolio of short courses in first aid, Dementia awareness, manual handling, autism and counselling.

Visit other industry care environments outside your placement requirements. Raise money for charity, Guest Speakers and the opportunity to enter UK skills competitions.

How will I be assessed?
Personal and professional development – this unit involves at least 150 hours of placement in a social care or early years settings. Students must reflect on each experience using tutor and mentor reports and their own evaluations and produce a portfolio. There will also be four exams over the two years.

Are there any costs associated with this course?
You will need a clear DBS. Students will be expected to wear a uniform in college and placement, you will find out more about the Health and Care poloshirt and hoodie at enrolment in August.
