What is this course about?
The course will cover an introduction to the following topics: Safe Working Practices, Information, Quantities and Communication with Others, Building Methods and Construction, Prepare Timber, Roofing and Flooring, Stairs and Kitchens, skirting boards, architraves, door frames and windows.
The course develops the learner’s practical ability and construction knowledge with a mixture of theory and practical sessions which develops the learner at their own pace.
As part of the course, you will produce several pieces of practical work to industrial standards that will demonstrate your ability and allow you to progress onto a Level 2 in Site Joinery

4 GCSE’s at grades 9 – 4 including English and Maths
What will this course lead on to?
The successful completion of this course could lead to a Level 2 Diploma or possible apprenticeship programme. During the course all learners are encouraged to gain work experience in order to make the transition to the workplace as smooth as possible when that time comes.
What will I learn on this course?
The course is designed as an introductory level that will teach the basic skills and processes required to pursue a career in Carpentry & Joinery. The preparation of different materials and a full selection of timber joints, the use of different types of tools and the communication skills required for today’s workplace.
Enrichment Opportunities:
The College has a full enrichment programme and all learners are expected to make the most of their time with us. Some of these activities include various sports tournaments, table tennis, X-Box competitions, remote control model racing. There will also be various trips and visits throughout the year.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is carried out on all practical tasks throughout the year. Each practical task will result in a pass, merit or distinction grade depending on the quality of your work produced. You will also be assessed through online and paper-based exams at the end of each theory unit.
Are there any costs associated with this course?
Each learner is required to purchase a Riverside College Hi Vis Polo shirt, Work trousers, safety boots, stationary equipment and a ring binder with note paper.
